COVERED WITH CARE
Category: Community Service Outreach
School: GSMST
Description: Students take an afternoon to create no-sew blankets. The council can provide snacks and drinks or collaborate with the school PTSA for refreshments. BOO-BOO BUNNIES
Category: Community Service Outreach
School: Mountain View High School
Description: On the night of our student council recharge, each member of our council learned how to make Boo-Boo bunnies. Boo-Boo bunnies are washcloths shaped into bunnies. They have googly eyes, and fuzzy tails. An ice cube can be placed in the center of the bunny so that little children can hold them against their boo boo’s. Student council members brought in washcloths ahead of time to donate to the project. Then we purchased the fuzzy noses, tails, and googly eyes. Then it was time to become a boo boo bunny factory! In about an hour we made almost 150 bunnies!! After we were done making them, our community service committee added poems to them and delivered them to a local daycare.

TRUNK OR TREAT
Category: Community Service Outreach
School: North Gwinnett High School
Description: Trick-or-Treat? There is no tricks at this halloween event, only safe and fun activities for the children within our community. For several years, our school has hosted this event in our school parking lot, and each car is sponsored by different clubs, organizations, and teams from our campus. Each of the groups decorate their car to any theme they choose and provide candy for the kids. Not only is there candy for the children, but there is a costume contest for the kids to show off their creative outfits. This year, we had a food truck come, which served macaroni and cheese for dinner, since the event was from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. We invited the elementary and middle schools within our cluster to this event, which allowed the parents to know that their children is having a fun time and still safe.

KING OF THE COURT
Category: Community Service Outreach
School: Pierce County Middle
Description: We raised money for cancer research this year during the week of homecoming. We call our court, "Kind of the Court." We had the student body vote for four male teachers at PCMS out of all the male teachers. After the top four was selected, that was our "PCMS King's Court." We placed four jars on the lunchroom stage and the students put money in the jar of the male participant that they wanted to win. All of the students and teachers became very involved in the fundraiser. We announced, every afternoon, the name of the teacher that was winning. This made it a big battle of who was going to raise the most money. At the end of the week, PCMS raised $7700.00 to donate to Cure Search.

MIDDLE SCHOOL RETREAT
Category: Community Service Outreach
School: North Gwinnett High School
Descriptions: Our high school council spent a Saturday afternoon to build relationships, learn, and develop our leadership as a whole with our cluster middle school. We began the day with icebreakers and games, allowing the middle schoolers to feel connected with the high schoolers. Then we broke out into workshop sessions, allowing a more intimate setting for the middle schoolers to get a more one-on-one experience with the high school presenters. These workshops illustrated the benefits of student council in high school and how they could maxium their potential and become a better leader in their school. Not only was this event eye opening for the middle schoolers, but for the high schoolers as well. The hours spent with them allowed us to reflect and realize the impact we can have on community.

NURSING HOME TRIP
School: Mountain View High School
Description: In previous years, our student council’s holiday party has been dedicated to acknowledging the achievement of our student council. However, this year, we decided that we wanted to not only celebrate what we’ve done but also spread our holiday cheers to the community through the
party. We decided to give back to a local nursing home called Delmars Gardens because we wanted to put a smile on their faces. Consequently, we decided on donating bars of soap, as hygiene products are always appreciated in nursing homes. We came up with the idea to wrap the soap bars into Santa’s sled to fit into the Holiday theme.
In order to do this, the council dedicated about one hour of our holiday party on December 2nd, 2014 to making these gifts. We bought bulks of bars of soap and wrapped the soap boxes with Holiday-themed wrapping paper. Then, we attached two candy canes to match the shape of the runners (blades) of the sled. Finally, we added ribbons to the sled to add a finishing touch. At the end, the council together packaged over 65 soap gifts! The student councilhad a meaningful experience and also bonded as they packaged the gifts.
On December 22nd, 2014, 13 of our student council members went to Delmars Garden to deliver our gifts to them. We first handed out the gifts to the residents and got to know the residents of the nursing home. We talked to them and listened to them and their life stories. We did crafts with the residents where we cut out the picture of them and Santa and glued them on an ornament-shaped foam cut out. We even sang carols to them and soon, thecouncil and the residents were laughing, crying, and forming heartwarming connections. Both the nursing home and our council members were so appreciative and thrilled about this experience and the start of a new relationship that we decided to continue our service with Delmars Garden.
